KEG INSTRUCTIONS
1. Kegs must be kept at as cold as possible either in a fridge or on ice. Beer must be kept below 4 degrees Celsius, or it will become extremely foamy. The beer is stored in a refrigerator at the Moon Under Water Brewery, so please pick-up your keg as close to your event as possible to maintain the temperate below 4 degrees Celsius. Do not put the keg in a freezer as beer freezes at roughly -4 degrees Celsius (average freezer temperature).
Question: I can’t fit a 30L keg in my fridge, what should I do?
Answer: Put the keg in the bucket the Moon Under Water Brewery provides and pour in at least 4 bags of ice. Keep the ice topped up while serving the beer from the keg.
2. Place your keg where it is going to be served (i.e., your kitchen, the backyard next to the BBQ, etc.) Ensure the keg is in the bucket with ice. Remove the plastic cap from the fixture on the top of the keg.
3. Get your tap, making sure it is not “engaged” (keep the handle in the “up” position).
4. Line the notches of the tap up with hole at the top of the keg. If this is done at an angle, it will wreck the keg and spray you with beer foam. Yikes!
5. You’ll notice a few open slits at the top of the keg and a ball bearing in the middle. The slits guide the tap’s notches and hold the tap in place.
6. Screw the tap into place in a clockwise motion. This should only require a quarter turn to lock into place.
7. Engage the tap by pulling the handle towards you and downwards to lock it in place. Once locked in place you should not see any beer or bubbles leaking out.
Troubleshooting: If your tap is leaking beer or gas, the tap installation has been done incorrectly. Disengage the tap handle by pulling towards you, then upwards. Tap the keg again ensuring the slits are lined up completely evenly.
8. Pour about six cups of beer or fill a pitcher. Don’t be alarmed, there will be some foam. When the foam falls, the pitcher should be about half full. You should be pouring without any foam after this point.
9. Enjoy your Moon Under Water beer with friends or enemies…
10. DO NOT OVER PUMP the tap. This will cause the beer to be excessively foamy. 2 – 3 pumps per cup is plenty. ALWAYS BE POURING BEER WHEN ENGAGING THE PUMP. Otherwise the pump will be damaged.
11. Once tapped, you’re introducing Oxygen to the beer which will cause the beer to go stale and flat. Ideally, the keg is consumed within 6 hours maximum, of tapping. Once the keg is tapped, be sure to keep it cold and do not move it around or shake it.
12. Please return the empty keg, tap, and bucket as soon as possible so others can enjoy Moon Under Water Beer! We appreciate it!
